Welcome to our class blog!  We are the students in Mrs. Ginther's Language Arts classes.  We're in 5th grade in a suburb of Cincinnati in SW Ohio.  We're looking forward to blogging about the books we're reading, what we're doing in class, and some of our projects.  You can also check out Mrs. Ginther's Blog.  We're so excited to get started!  Our first posting will be "It's Monday!  What are you reading?", a meme started by Teach Mentor Texts and Book Journey.  Stop by frequently to see updates, pictures, and video clips.

We're currently focusing on the theme topic FEAR.  It's a perfect topic for the month of Halloween!  We're reading aloud Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.  We're about half way through the book and we are studying the elements that make the book historical fiction, as well as the elements of fear that are present in the book.  Watch a book trailer for Number the Stars here:

Convinced you need to check it out yet?

We are also reading a historical fiction novel with a book group.  These books include:

Countdown by Deborah Wiles

Titanic: Book One--Unsinkable by Gordon Korman

May B. by Caroline Starr Rose

City of Orphans by Avi

Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin (which is technically a nonfiction book, not historical fiction)

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson

The Liberation of Gabriel King by K. L. Going

We'll be reviewing some of these books in the upcoming weeks.  Stay tuned and keep reading!

  1. What a great idea! I will be happy to share your books with my students. They are 4th graders and would enjoy many of the titles you listed. Another book which will deals with fear is Bridge to Terabithia...even though it is an older book, it is one of my favorites. Good luck to you and your students. We will definitely visit again.
